Autoclave FAQ — Buying & Technical Questions

The classes come from the European standard EN 13060 for small steam sterilizers. A Class B autoclave uses fractionated (pulsed) vacuum air removal, so it can sterilize every load type: solid, hollow, porous, wrapped and unwrapped instruments. A Class N autoclave removes air by gravity displacement and is intended for solid, unwrapped instruments only. Class S sits between the two and is specified by its manufacturer for particular load types. Keling's KLT-B, KLT-Z and KLT-X Series are Class B; the KLT-A Series is Class N.

A horizontal autoclave loads from the front, like an oven, and suits large chambers (Keling's KL Series runs from 100 L to 1,500 L) used in hospital CSSD and operating theatre workflows, including double-door pass-through installation. A vertical autoclave loads from the top and puts more chamber volume in less floor space, which is why 35–150 L vertical models such as the KLL and KLLS Series are the standard in laboratories and clinics.

Match chamber volume to your peak daily load. As a rule of thumb: a small dental clinic is well served by an 18–23 L benchtop unit; a busy dental hospital or clinic chain by 45–50 L (KLT-Z); a laboratory by a 35–100 L vertical unit; and a hospital CSSD by 150 L or more of horizontal capacity, sized so a full day's instrument flow can be processed in 2–4 cycles. Standard sterilization programs run at 121 °C or 134 °C saturated steam. Keling sterilizers operate in the 115–138 °C range depending on the series, with rated working pressures of 0.142 MPa (portable KLS series, 126 °C) to 0.22–0.23 MPa (benchtop, vertical and horizontal series, 134–138 °C). A typical cycle at 134 °C sterilizes in 4 minutes or more; at 121 °C in about 20 minutes.

Depending on series: over-temperature protection, over-pressure self-relief, low-water-level protection, anti-dry-heating protection, safety door interlocks (electronic on benchtop models), emergency stop (KLT-Z), and automatic fault detection. Horizontal models add three-level user authority management and complete cycle records verified by both F₀ value and temperature-time.

Usually not. Keling benchtop models have a built-in independent steam generator, vertical models a built-in evaporator or heating elements, and KL Series horizontal sterilizers up to 400 L include a built-in steam generator. Only large CSSD sterilizers of 600 L and above require an external steam source (0.3–0.6 MPa).
